Hytale Chicken Coop: How to Make It and Get Eggs

Last updated: 2026-11-01

The Chicken Coop is the block that turns chickens into a daily egg supply. Craft it at a tier 3 Farmer's Workbench from 20 wood of any type, 50 Essence of Life and 10 Plant Fiber, catch chickens with a Capture Crate, then left-click the coop with the full crate to move each chicken in. Every chicken living in the coop leaves one egg a day. Checked against Update 7 (October 12, 2026) and the Hytale Wiki.

How to Make a Chicken Coop

  • Reach tier 3 on the Farmer's Workbench: the upgrade costs 1 Greater Essence of Life, 10 Carrots, 10 Corn and 10 Lightwood Logs. The Workbench Guide lists every tier.
  • Gather the materials: 20 wood of any type, 50 Essence of Life and 10 Plant Fiber. Essence of Life comes from crops; the Farming Guide shows which crops give the most.
  • Craft it: the coop is in the farming recipes of the Farmer's Workbench. Since Update 3 it takes 2 seconds to make instead of 4.
  • Place it: set it down near your base. A fence is optional, because chickens that live in a coop stay close to it during the day.

How to Get Chickens Into the Coop

  • Make a Capture Crate: 4 wood of any type and 50 Essence of Life at a tier 1 Farmer's Workbench. Crates do not stack, so carry one per chicken you plan to bring back.
  • Find chickens: small flocks wander the Drifting Plains of Zone 1, and Kweebec villages keep a few in pens.
  • Catch one: hold the crate, look at the chicken and left-click. Wild chickens can be caught as they are; tamed ones (fed corn) work too.
  • Move it in: back at the coop, left-click the coop itself while holding the full crate. The chicken now belongs to that coop. Clicking the ground instead just lets it go.
  • Repeat until the coop holds five chickens, then build a second coop for more.

Collecting Eggs

  • When they lay: chickens that live in a coop go inside for the night (7 PM to 6 AM game time) and leave one egg each per day.
  • How to collect: a small bag at the coop door means eggs are waiting. Interact with it to take them; the bag vanishes once it is empty.
  • No rush: eggs stack up day after day, so one visit after a long trip collects them all.
  • How many: a full coop of five chickens gives up to five eggs a day.
  • What eggs are for: eating one restores 5% Health at once, and eggs go into recipes. A Bird's Nest also drops one egg when broken, but nests never grow back.

Chicken Coop Not Working? Check These

  • The chickens seem to be gone: chickens sometimes stay inside the coop in the daytime too, so the yard can look empty while they are fine.
  • The chicken was never assigned: releasing a chicken next to the coop does not count. Left-click the coop block itself with the full crate.
  • The coop is full: past five chickens, the extra ones need a coop of their own.
  • Tamed chickens gave no eggs: before Update 4 (March 26, 2026), coops ignored tamed chickens. Update 4 fixed it, according to the Hytale Wiki.
  • The coop refused new chickens: before Update 6 (August 27, 2026), a space could stay taken after its chicken despawned. Update 6 fixed this, so an old coop that seemed stuck should take chickens again.
  • A chicken turned into another animal: Update 3 fixed animals inside a coop changing into other creatures.

Can Chickens Breed?

Not yet. Breeding is in neither Update 7 nor the two Update 8 pre-releases (October 22 and 29, 2026), and the Hytale Wiki says chicks stay chicks. To get more chickens, catch more wild ones. The Taming Guide covers breeding for every animal.

Changes by Update

  • Early access (January 13, 2026): the Chicken Coop and the Capture Crate arrive; the coop needs a tier 5 Farmer's Workbench.
  • Update 1, per the Hytale Wiki: farm animals stop climbing onto the coop.
  • Update 3 (February 17, 2026): the coop drops to a tier 3 Farmer's Workbench and crafts in 2 seconds instead of 4; animals in a coop no longer turn into other creatures; the Capture Crate can no longer pick up dead animals.
  • Update 4 (March 26, 2026): Skrills start laying eggs, and, per the Hytale Wiki, coops start counting tamed chickens.
  • Update 6 (August 27, 2026): coop spaces free up when their chicken despawns.
  • Update 7 (October 12, 2026): no coop changes.
  • Capacity: the Hytale Wiki said three chickens per coop until October 2026 and now says five; no patch note mentions a change.
