Hytale Mounts: Every Rideable Animal & How to Tame a Horse
Last updated: 2026-11-01
Hytale has three mounts as of Update 7 (October 12, 2026): the Horse, the Camel and the Ram. Tame one with its favorite food (a carrot, a tomato or an apple), then press F beside it to climb on and F again to get off. The Skeleton Horse could be ridden at the early access launch but not since Update 3, and the base game has no flying mounts. Checked against Update 7 and the Hytale Wiki.
Every Mount at a Glance
| Mount | Tame it with | Where it lives | Health |
|---|---|---|---|
| Horse | Carrot | Emerald Wilds (Zone 1), in small herds | 124 |
| Camel | Tomato | Deserts of the Howling Sands (Zone 2), alone or in pairs | 126 |
| Ram | Apple | Badlands mountains of the Howling Sands (Zone 2) | 124 |
Foals, Camel Calves and Ram Lambs cannot be ridden. No other creature can be ridden either, including the Skeleton Horse and the big Tetrabird of Zone 1.
How to Tame a Horse
- Grow carrots: a Carrot Seed Bag costs 3 Essence of Life at a tier 2 Farmer's Workbench. The Farming Guide covers planting and watering.
- Find a herd: horses graze in small groups across the Emerald Wilds, the zone you start in.
- Come at it from the front or side: a wild horse kicks anyone behind it (30 damage) and bolts if you crowd it.
- Hold a carrot and interact (F): the horse is tamed and stops fleeing. Holding anything else makes it show a thought bubble of the food it wants.
- Climb on: press F beside the tamed horse, steer with the movement keys, and press F to step off.
- Keep it happy: pet it with an empty hand and give it a carrot now and then.
Riding Tips
- Jumps: a horse clears walls up to three blocks tall.
- Falls: animals take no fall damage, and neither do you while you sit on one, according to the Hytale Wiki.
- Water: since Update 4 a mount can no longer sprint without end through water or other fluids.
- Leaving it: a tamed mount stays near where you get off; it only runs if you hit it.
- Distance: riding is much faster than walking, which makes a mount the quickest way across a zone you have already explored.
Camel and Ram
- Camel: lives in the Howling Sands deserts; tame it with a tomato. Its shell comes in six colors. Green is the most common (about half of all camels) and red the rarest (about 1 in 200). Camels pull into their shells at night.
- Ram: lives on the Badlands mountains of the Howling Sands; tame it with an apple. Before taming, a Ram follows anyone holding an apple, and it fights back when attacked.
Can You Ride a Skeleton Horse?
No, not any more. At the early access launch the Skeleton Horse of the Devastated Lands (Zone 4) could be ridden, but Update 3 (February 17, 2026) took that away, and it cannot be tamed, according to the Hytale Wiki. Guides from January 2026 that still list it as a mount are out of date. The same goes for the Armored Skeleton Horse.
Saddles, Flying Mounts and Breeding
- Saddle: you do not need one; a tamed mount can be ridden right away. The Hytale Wiki notes saddle attachments in the horse's game files since Update 3, which hints that saddles may come later.
- Flying mounts: the base game has none as of Update 7. Mods can add more mounts, but they are not part of the game.
- Breeding: not possible yet. No patch up to Update 7 or the Update 8 pre-release adds it, so tame more wild horses instead.
Changes by Update
- Early access (January 13, 2026): the Horse, Camel, Ram, Skeleton Horse and Armored Skeleton Horse can be ridden straight from the wild.
- Update 2, per the Hytale Wiki: horse and camel kicks now hit for 30.
- Update 3 (February 17, 2026): taming arrives. The Horse (carrot), Camel (tomato) and Ram (apple) can be ridden once tamed, the two Skeleton Horses stop being mounts, and mount handling is improved.
- Update 4 (March 26, 2026): mounts no longer sprint forever in fluids, plus several mount fixes.
- Update 6 (August 27, 2026): the game now checks that you are close enough before you mount.
- Update 7 (October 12, 2026): no mount changes.
