Hytale Taming Guide: Every Tameable Animal & Its Favorite Food

Taming arrived in Update 3 (February 17, 2026). You tame an animal by interacting with it while holding its favorite food, and the Hytale Wiki lists 19 tameable animals, plus their young. The details below come from the wiki's Taming page (September 13, 2026 version) and the official patch notes, listed under Sources at the end.

How Taming Works

• Look for the prompt: when you look at an animal that can be tamed, a tame prompt appears.
• Hold its favorite food: a heart appears over the animal's head when you come near with it. Interact (F by default) while holding the food to tame the animal.
• Wrong food? Interact while holding anything else and a thought bubble shows a picture of the food it wants.
• After taming: tamed animals do not run away unless you hit them, and they greet you now and then. Pet them with an empty hand or feed them from time to time.
• Hungry animals: a hungry tamed animal may show anger particles when you are nearby. Feed it its favorite food or a Feed Bag; both also lure tamed livestock.

Favorite Foods

Young animals want the same food as the adults.

• Apple: Goat, Ram, Mouflon
• Lettuce: Cow, Sheep
• Carrot: Horse, Rabbit
• Cauliflower: Bison
• Turnip: Pig
• Corn: Chicken, Turkey
• Tomato: Camel
• Chilli: Skrill
• Aubergine: Wild Pig
• Pumpkin: Boar
• Potato: Mosshorn and Plain Mosshorn
• Onion: Warthog
• Cotton: Desert Chicken

What Tamed Animals Give You

• Ride: the Horse, Camel and Ram can be mounted once tamed.
• Shear: Chickens and Desert Chickens give 1 to 2 White Feathers, Skrills 1 to 2 Red Feathers and Sheep 1 to 3 Wool Scraps.
• Milk: use a bucket on a Cow for milk, or on a Mosshorn for Mosshorn milk and up to 2 moss.
• Eggs: Chickens, Desert Chickens and Skrills lay eggs. A Chicken Coop (Farmer's Workbench tier 3) houses up to three chickens caught in a Capture Crate and gives one egg per chicken each day.
• Poop: most adult animals produce it, and it goes into Fertilizer Bags for your farm.

Where to Get the Foods

Apples come from apple trees. Every other favorite food is a crop grown from seed bags made at the Farmer's Workbench:

• Tier 1: Lettuce
• Tier 2: Carrot, Corn
• Tier 3: Cauliflower, Turnip
• Tier 4: Aubergine, Pumpkin
• Tier 5: Tomato, Chilli
• Tier 6: Cotton
• Tier 7: Onion, Potato

A Feed Bag (10 Wheat, 5 vegetables, 5 fruit and 10 Essence of Life at a tier 1 Farmer's Workbench) feeds and lures tamed livestock. The Farming Guide covers growing the crops.

Changes by Update

• Update 3: added an early version of taming. Tamed animals can be petted and fed, and some can be milked, sheared or mounted.
• Update 4, per the Hytale Wiki: Skrills lay eggs; tamed Chickens, Desert Chickens, Rabbits, Skrills, Turkeys and their young no longer act timid; tamed Chickens can lay eggs in Chicken Coops.
