What Happens When You Die
By default, dying drops 50% of the items you carry and lowers the durability of your equipment by 10%. EmeraldHost's server guide adds that half of each item stack drops, with at least one item from each stack. Sources: Hytale Wiki: Death (edited July 24, 2026) and EmeraldHost: item loss on death.
Dying in Creative mode, for example by flying into the void, drops nothing and damages nothing. Source: Hytale Wiki: Death.
How to Keep Your Inventory in a Single-Player World
Keep inventory is not a command; it is a world setting. A video guide shows it on the world settings screen as Inventory Penalty On Death, with three choices: None, Drop All and Partial Drop. Partial Drop is the default, and it comes with two sliders: Resource Loss % On Death (50 by default) and Durability Loss % On Death (10 by default). Source: Blindy Guides video, January 22, 2026, at 0:58.
- New world: open the world's settings while creating it and set Inventory Penalty On Death to None.
- Existing world: video guides change the setting by right-clicking the world in the Worlds list and editing it. Sources: Blindy Guides and Games & Apps Tutorials, January 15, 2026.
Update 5 (May 26, 2026) confirms that worlds can be set up without an inventory penalty on death: items stored in the backpack no longer lose durability in such worlds. Source: Update 5 patch notes. The video guides are from early 2026, so the screen may look slightly different in the current version.
How to Keep Your Inventory on a Server
Death rules are set per world in that world's config file, universe/worlds/<world name>/config.json. Several server hosts describe the same three settings; one guide names the file world.json instead. Sources: EmeraldHost, Host Havoc, June 9, 2026, GGServers, March 12, 2026 and MintServers, February 11, 2026.
- ItemsLossMode:
Nonekeeps every item,Alldrops everything you carry, andConfigureduses the percentage below. - ItemsAmountLossPercentage: how much of your items drop, from 0 to 100. It only applies in
Configuredmode. - ItemsDurabilityLossPercentage: how much durability your equipment loses, from 0 to 100. EmeraldHost notes that it applies in every mode.
To keep everything on death, set ItemsLossMode to None and ItemsDurabilityLossPercentage to 0. EmeraldHost notes that these death settings are not in the file by default and have to be added to it.
Hardcore Mode
Update 6 (August 27, 2026) added Hardcore Mode, which is chosen when a world is created: open Customize and pick an option from the Hardcore menu. In Hardcore, dying drops everything you are carrying and switches you to Spectator Mode. Source: Update 6 patch notes.
- Off: Hardcore is not enabled.
- Permadeath: each player has a single life.
- Three Strikes: each player has three lives.
- Nine Lives: the whole world shares a pool of nine lives; the run ends for everyone after the ninth death.
- Soulbound: if any player dies, the run is over for everyone.
As a spectator, you stay in the world, can follow the players who are still alive or fly the camera freely, and enemies ignore you.
How the Calculator's Modes Match the Game
- No Penalty matches Inventory Penalty On Death set to None (
ItemsLossMode: Noneon a server), or dying in Creative mode. - Partial Drop matches the default Partial Drop: 50% of items and 10% durability.
- Full Drop matches Drop All (
ItemsLossMode: Allon a server), or a death in Hardcore Mode.
How to Use This Tool
- Enter your gear tier - Select the weapons and armor you plan to use.
- Estimate inventory value - Add high value items you carry during the run.
- Set travel distance - Choose the biome or travel time to the target area.
- Pick difficulty - Adjust risk based on enemy density and boss fights.
- Review the risk report - Use the output to decide if the run is worth the reward.
Why Death Risk Matters in Hytale
Death is more than a setback. It costs durability, consumables, and time spent recovering your gear. In deep biomes or multi-stage dungeons, a failed run can erase hours of progress.
This calculator helps you weigh that cost against the expected loot so you can plan safer routes or bring stronger gear when the risk is too high.
Pro Tips
- Budget for recovery - Plan at least one extra durability repair for long dungeon runs.
- Lower your carry value - Leave rare materials at base if the recovery path is long or dangerous.
