Hytale Crafting Guide - Material Tiers & Workbenches
Last updated: 2026-01-15

Hytale's crafting system has depth that isn't obvious at first. This guide explains the full material progression, workbench requirements, and how to craft efficiently.
Material Tier Progression
Materials in Hytale follow a strict tier system. Each tier unlocks better stats and durability:
- Tier 1: Wood (starter gear, low durability)
- Tier 2: Stone (3x durability vs wood)
- Tier 3: Copper (first metal tier, requires furnace)
- Tier 4: Iron (significant stat boost)
- Tier 5: Thorium (requires Tier 2 workbench)
- Tier 6: Adamantite (endgame materials)
Don't skip tiers thinking you'll save time. Each tier makes gathering the next tier significantly faster.
Workbench Tiers Explained
Different recipes require different workbenches. Here's what you need:
- Basic Crafting Table: Wood and stone items
- Furnace: Smelting ores into ingots
- Blacksmith's Anvil (Tier 1): Iron and copper weapons/tools
- Blacksmith's Anvil (Tier 2): Thorium gear
- Master Forge: Adamantite and special recipes
Upgrade your workbenches as soon as you have the materials. The new recipes are always worth it.
Calculating Material Costs
This is where most players waste time. A single Thorium Sword might need:
- 3 Thorium Ingots (from 6 Thorium Ore)
- 2 Wood Planks
- 1 Leather Strip
But if you want a full set of Thorium gear? The math gets complicated fast. That's exactly why we built the Crafting Calculator (/hytale-crafting-calculator). Enter what you want to craft, and it tells you exactly what raw materials to gather.
Efficient Crafting Workflow
Follow this workflow for any crafting project:
- Decide what you want to make (weapon, armor set, tools)
- Use the Crafting Calculator to get the full material list
- Gather all raw materials in one trip
- Smelt ores while you process other materials
- Craft in batch to minimize inventory juggling
This approach is 2-3x faster than crafting item by item.
Repair vs. Replace Decision
Should you repair damaged gear or craft new? It depends on:
- Material cost of repair vs. new craft
- How much durability you've lost
- Whether you have spare materials
Our Repair Calculator (/hytale-repair-calculator) does this math for you. Sometimes repair is efficient, sometimes crafting new saves materials.
Pro Tips for Crafting
- Keep a chest near your workbench with common materials (wood, ingots, leather)
- Smelt in bulk - 64 ore at a time uses the same fuel as 8
- Higher tier pickaxes mine lower tier ores faster (worth the upgrade)
- Some recipes share materials - plan sets together, not individual items
